Admittedly, I am not a big television watcher. In fact, for a period of time, I didn’t watch TV at all. Well, that isn’t entirely true, because I watched cartoons daily. I am still a big kid at heart and the Flintstones, The Jetsons, Tom & Jerry, and Looney Toons can still captivate me as if I was 8 years old again.
….but I digress.
I’ve enclosed clips from the two shows I am REALLY into now. I know they have been out a while, but hey, they are new to me. I’ll also share details about my favorite character and hopefully, I won’t spoil anything for you. If I do, watch anyway.
Santa Clarita Diet
If you listened to my latest podcast episode, I talked about tutoring international students who want to learn English. If you haven’t heard it, you can LISTEN HERE. Well, while speaking with one of my students about what she does to help her learn when she isn’t online, she shared that she loves this show. I promised to check it out.
About a month later, so as not to be a Big Fat Liar, I decided to give it a go. Oh Em Effin Gee. I laughed my ass off. I hadn’t laughed like that in a long time. Before I knew it, I was three-quarters of the way through the season. Since I’m no quitter, I finished the last few shows and called it a night.
Don’t laugh, but it took me forever to figure out that Drew Barrymore played the main character, Sheila. It just didn’t seem like her typical role. Sheila started off really demure and accommodating and once the season got going, she became this badass that no one recognized anymore. It was like she hired a coach and worked closely with them to achieve her goals 😉 and make her dreams a reality.
While trying to find her way, Sheila has to create work/life balance, be an involved parent, manage her health crisis, and maintain open lines of communication with her husband. That sounds a lot like many women I know. She makes a valiant effort to be all things to all people but fails miserably. How does that compare to your life?
Grace & Frankie
This show is the total opposite of what I expected. My husband suggested that I check it out and I have to say that I am quite happy with his choice for me. First, the main characters are frenemies who have tolerated each other for 20+ years. Their husbands, who are business partners at their law firm, gather them together one night at dinner to tell the wives that they are lovers and want a divorce. Ultimately, both wives retreat to the safety of their co-purchased beach house and the real fun begins. While that’s going on, both couples have to deal with telling their children, friends, and extended family about the change in circumstance.
The reason I love and recommend this show is that it contains so many of the issues we deal with from day to day. Relationships fall apart and we have to learn how to rebuild our lives the best way we can. Sometimes people who we once thought were enemies can come alongside us and become friends and our greatest support.
Eventually, some things start falling into place and other things go way left. Isn’t that how life tends to be? We watch how they learn how to become a different type of family. No one likes what happened or that there were years of infidelity and lies, but they all want to heal. The only way to do that is to commit to the process. Communicate your feelings in an honest and respectful way. Lastly, realize that healing takes time. There is no specific time frame for dealing with life’s problems; there is no magic formula.
Frankie & Grace just put a comedic spin on being handed a bowl full of crap in your later years.
Conclusion
Again, I am not an avid TV watcher, but I know good stuff when I see it. If you haven’t already thought about giving one or both of these shows a chance, think about it. What have you got to lose?
While you’re at it, tell me about some of the shows you like. I am excited about finding more gems I may have missed. I am willing to try anything twice.
You are enough,
*I have no affiliation with Netflix nor do I benefit by you signing up and/or watching the show. They just happened to have the best clips 🙂
